Why measure in the ear?
The goal of thermometry is to measure core body temperature which is thetemperature of the vital organs. The ear is an excellent site to measuretemperature. Ear temperatures accurately reflect core body temperature, sincethe eardrum shares blood supply with the temperature control center in thebrain, the hypothalamus. Therefore changes in body temperature are accuratelyreflected sooner and more accurately in the ear than at other sites.

Braun Thermoscan measures the infrared heat generated by the eardrum and thesurrounding tissues. It is more accurate than measuring rectal or templetemperature.
